Upon opening the time capsule that my colleagues and I have
discovered, we see inside five items. We know that someone placed each
of these items in the vault in the hopes that we of the future could
look into the lives of the past and give us a glimpse into what the
people of the 1960s were like, what the atmosphere of that time period
was and hopefully give us a taste of the culture of the era.
The
first item that we discovered and removed from the capsule is a copy of
Time Magazine dated November 29, 1963. The top story of this issue
tells us about a man named John Fitzgerald Kennedy who was President of
the United States at the time, and of his assassination by a gunman
named Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. He was struck down by two
bullets, one in the head and one in the neck as he was traveling in a
motorcade through Dealey Plaza with his wife Jackie at his side and
Texas Governor John Connelly directly in front of him (Time Magazine,
1963).
This particular act of violent protest is most significant,
as the assassination is and has been the focus of many conspiracy
theorists over the years. Many people have claimed or suspected that
the government had a hand in John F. Kennedy’s death. While he was
popular with the general populous, he had also made many enemies ranging
from the Soviet Union, with whom the United States was engaged in a
Cold War with, to Fidel Castro whom he had faced down over the Cuban
Missile Crisis and came to blows with in the Bay of Pigs fiasco. It is
also suggested that organized crime was used to recruit potential
assassins with the intent of killing Castro and when this did not
materialize, a backlash of cover up occurred which included the killing
of John F. Kennedy.
